چکیده

This paper examines statistical approaches for interpolating climatic data over large regions, providing a brief introduction to interpolation techniques for climate variables of use in agricultural research, as well as general recommendations for future research to assess interpolation techniques. Three approaches—1) inverse distance weighted averaging (IDWA), 2) thin plate smoothing splines and 3) co-kriging—were evaluated for a 20,000 km2 square area covering the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Taking into account valued error prediction, data assumptions, and computational simplicity, we recommend use of thin-plate smoothing splines for interpolating climate variables.

Combining Deterministic and Probabilistic Methods to Produce Gridded Climatologies

There are nearly 8,000 sites in the United States for which detailed climatologies of various atmospheric variables have been produced. However, spatial interpolation of these point climatologies via traditional techniques (IDW, kriging, etc.) is often not accurate, especially in mountainous regions, coastal zones, or data sparse areas. This paper discusses NCDC's preliminary efforts to combine...

Analysis of the Relationship between Ndvi and Climate Variables in Minnesota Using Geographically Weighted Regression and Spatial Interpolation

In order to better understand the effects of climate change on ecosystems, the relationship between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and atmospheric constituents have been explored widely by scientists using the global technique of Ordinary Least Squared (OLS) regression analysis. However, recent studies exploring such relationships at different spatial scales have revealed that lo...

VEMAP Phase 2 bioclimatic database. I. Gridded historical (20th century) climate for modeling ecosystem dynamics across the conterminous USA

Analysis and simulation of biospheric responses to historical forcing require surface climate data that capture those aspects of climate that control ecological processes, including key spatial gradients and modes of temporal variability. We developed a multivariate, gridded historical climate dataset for the conterminous USA as a common input database for the Vegetation/Ecosystem Modeling and ...

Hydrologic Implications of Dynamical and Statistical Approaches to Downscaling Climate Model Outputs

Six approaches for downscaling climate model outputs for use in hydrologic simulation were evaluated, with particular emphasis on each method’s ability to produce precipitation and other variables used to drive a macroscale hydrology model applied at much higher spatial resolution than the climate model. Comparisons were made on the basis of a twenty-year retrospective (1975– 1995) climate simu...

Scattered Data Interpolation in Three or More Variables

This is a survey of techniques for the interpolation of scattered data in three or more independent variables. It covers schemes that can be used for any number of variables as well as schemes speci cally designed for three variables. Emphasis is on breadth rather than depth, but there are explicit illustrations of di erent techniques used in the solution of multivariate interpolation problems.
